Complex ventral hernia

This is the end stage of all hernias, the worst scenario; when the hernia content is much bigger than the volume of the abdomen, it's impossible its reduction, and usually affects respiratory, bowel and spinal function.

It courses with giant hernia sacs, and pre-op preparation for this case is important, sometimes botulinum toxin injection in the front and lateral abdominal wall muscles is needed, or insuflation of the abdominal cavity with air, to enlarge the muscles and volume, so the hernia content may be reduced back to the abdomen.

CT-scan or MRI may be used to help in the diagnosis and volume measures of the hernia and the abdomen.

This type of cases must only be attended by experts in hernia surgery.
